Reporting in the Daily Telegraph, London on 02 June 2009 Barney Henderson writes that --- nearly one third of the Indian Members of Parliament (MP's) who took their seats for the first session of the new Parliament yesterday had criminal charges against them. A total of 153 of the 543 politicians elected in the biggest democratic election in history have criminal cases pending against them including nine ministers according to a study by two non-governmental organizations-the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR) and National Election Watch (NEW). The number of 'mafia politicians' is up from 128 MP's elected to last Parliament and 15 MP's have at least one murder charge against them. ADR and NEW compiled the survey based on affidavits filed by 533 MP's.
