THE BEAN SPILLERS

Fatima Rizvi

Over the last several weeks Pakistanis have watched former intelligence and military personnel competing with each other in tell all telethons. There are disclosures about past operations to undermine political governments, forge political alliances and distribution of large sums of money to politicians to get them on board whatever plan was being hatched. Suddenly everyone seems to have 20/20 vision and crystal clear memory about long past and mostly irrelevant events. A media obsessed with popularity ratings has welcomed them like long lost brothers giving them prime time space. Lost in translation is the enormous damage that is being done to institutions and the fact that what happened in past environments cannot possibly happen in the prevailing situation.

If these suddenly clairvoyant persons think they can absolve themselves of past sins by confessions that shift blame to others then they are sadly mistaken. Most people want them to crawl back into the woodwork from where they emerged. If they were trapped into doing what they are doing or if they succumbed to motivations and incentives then their conduct is reprehensible but not really surprising given their past. Those who watch these ageing has-beens do so for entertainment because they are making a laughing stock of themselves.
