India seeking US help to secure sensitive installations

NEW DELHI: India has asked US experts to revamp security of its seats of power, the South Block, where the prime minister and important ministers sit - as well as President's House and parliament.

All these buildings are located in close proximity and are a potential target for terrorists. The facilities' security is being made foolproof to safeguard senior leaders from possible attacks. The aim of the security upgrade is to replicate security systems installed at the Pentagon in the South Block, which also houses the defence and foreign ministries and the headquarters of the armed forces, says a report in Hong Kong-based Asia Times Online. Like the Pentagon, the report says, the South Block is also being equipped with new surveillance and access-control systems for the constant monitoring of vehicles, visitors, officials and other staff. The South Block will also remain out-of-bounds for tour groups.
