The Spreading Rot

According to media reports FazalUllah the cleric behind the Swat carnage in Pakistan's Malakand area has reached Afghanistan. This sounds logical because that is from where he was being supported and that is from where he can continue doing what his masters tell him to do. It sounds illogical because it was the cleric himself who called BBC from a phone obtained in Afghanistan to give them his new coordinates. Why would he do so? To highlight a Pakistani security lapse and to make his threats sound real because most of the trouble in Pakistan is rooted in Afghanistan? If true, though unlikely, Fazlullah has pointed the finger at those who harbor the enemies of Pakistan and those who support their activities. The next phase of operations will have to be against those whose locations are known or discovered.


Northern Afghanistan is coming up on radar screens as the scene of future violence. In spite of the Afghan Governments hold in that area there has been stepped up insurgent activity. The canvas in Afghanistan is being broadened and the lead organization for this area will be the IMU---the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan-that was also supporting the TTP in South Waziristan. The NATO logistics moving from Central Asia are sure to be a target as will be the US/NATO bases in Uzbekistan, Khyrghistan and Tajkistan. The earlier panic reaction by German troops that led to massive civilian casualties has alienated the local population there.
