Indian forces tear-gas Kashmiris

Pakistan Daily

Security forces burst teargas shells and resorted to repeated lathicharge to disperse demonstrators, demanding the removal of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) roadside bunkers near Islamia college.

The trouble started when people along with students took to streets at Hawal near the Islamic college, demanding immediate removal of the CRPF bunkers on both sides of the road, leading to city outskirts, including Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura.

Raising slogans, demanding removal of the bunkers, the demonstrators blocked the main road and refused to allow any traffic movement.

However, when they were marching towards the bunker, the forces resorted to lathicharge which had no impact on them. Later, they burst teargas shells to bring the situation under control. Traffic was diverted through other routes as heavy clash was going on. The demand for the removal of the bunkers came a day after similar demand was raised by traders and hoteliers of Lal Chowk, where two militants were killed after they attacked a CRPF bunker, housed in damaged Palladium cinema on January 6.

Pahari speaking people in Rajouri and Poonch districts today held protest demonstrations to press for their demand of Scheduled Tribe status in Jammu and Kashmir. Border town of Mendhar observed a complete shutdown following the strike call given by social organisations of these people.

All the shops were closed for the day as Pahari speaking people staged protest demonstrations in the town, a source told UNI. Similarly, a large number of students, acting on the call of the Pahari Speaking Students Union (PSSU) - a sister organisation of Jammu and Kashmir Pahari Cultural and Welfare Forum (JKPCWF) - staged demonstrations and rallies in border towns of Mendhar, Rajouri and Sunderbani, sources said.
