Shahid Azmi, a lawyer for Ansari, who along with Sabahuddin Ahmed is accused of being a member of Lashkar-e-Taiba, was shot at by unknown gunmen in a Mumbai suburb.

"He was shot at in his office. We have to ascertain the identity of the assailants. We have some clues," said Deven Bharti, an additional commissioner of police.

The trial of the two Indian nationals and Mohammad Ajmal Kasab, the man accused of being the lone surviving gunman from among the 10 who attacked Mumbai, is ongoing in the city. There have been reports of threats to lawyers of all three.

At least 166 people were killed in the attacks.
