Amnesty International visits Indian-held Kashmir

S.O.S Kashmir

The global human rights agency, Amnesty International (AI), has been given access to visit Indian-occupied Kashmir for the first time since an armed insurgency erupted in the state in 1989. A two-member team of Amnesty International (AI) landed in Srinagar for a first-ever visit on Monday, with the freedom to "go anywhere" and "meet anyone" to evaluate and note the human rights situation in Indian-occupied Kashmir. To assess the human rights situation first-hand, this two-member Amnesty International (AI) team, headed by Ramesh Gopal Krishna, has arrived on a six-day visit. They plan to meet separatist leaders and the government officials tomorrow. The AI team is scheduled to meet the chief minister, Omar Abdullah, the president of the PDP, Mahbooba Mufti, the chairman of the Hurriyat (M), Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, the chairman of the JKLF, Muhammad Yasin Malik, the state police chief, Kuldeep Khoda, representatives of the Hurriyat (G), and other sections of the society. The High Court Bar Association President, Mian Abdul Qayoom, said the team has not contacted the Bar so far. "Once it contacts us, we will decide accordingly what issues we will be taking to them," Qayoom said.

According to sources, the separatist leaders, during their interaction with the AI team, would appraise it of growing human rights violations, Shopian double murder and rape case, and the killings of three innocent students in Rainawari, Nishat and Lal Chowk this year.
