
PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Owais Ahmed Ghani on Sunday praised response by the medical professionals of tertiary care hospitals of the provincial metropolis to emergencies in wake of terrorist activities and said the challenging circumstances were near an end.
"Every time the medical professionals were found in hospitals and I have never come across a single public complaint against them, especially during the past two years and no doubt credit for that goes to the doctors and the society", he said while addressing as the chief guest at the annual get-together and dinner of the faculty of the Postgraduate Medical Institute, Peshawar.
Three senior doctors-Prof. Dr. Abdul Samad, Prof. Dr. Shahnaz Akhtar and Prof. Dr. Hameed Ahmed-were feted on their retirement from service, said an official handout. Prof. Dr. Iftikhar Ahmad of Hayatabad Medical Complex was declared the best doctor of the year and awarded a souvenir. Special honours were also extended to Prof. Dr. Arshad Javed, Prof. Dr. Muzzaffaruddin, Prof. Liaquat Ali, Prof. Alia Zaidi, Prof Amer Bilal, Dr. Sahibzada Muhammad Noor, Prof. Fazale Raziq, Prof. Lubna Hassan, Dr. Abid Jameel and Prof Muhammad Tahir in recognition of their services to the Institute.
The governor said the nation had passed through a highly challenging situation wherein every citizen right from soldier to general; cop to senior officers of security forces; political worker to political leader; women, children, elders and youth have offered sacrifices. "Inshaullah we would not only succeed in restoration of normal situation in the near future but would also have better opportunities for development and progress of our motherland," he added.
Owais Ghani said: "We have faced the challenges courageously; still confronting the same situation bravely and being a developing nation we will have to confront problems in future too". The governor mentioned the enthusiastic spirit of brotherhood and generosity extended to millions of internally displaced persons from Malakand Division and certain parts of Fata as well as mitigating the miseries of the affectees of the earthquake in 2005.
The Governor also appreciated the courageous response of the media in shouldering its professional responsibilities and said the historians would never ignore the persons who set the constructive trends.
Pointing to the retiring faculty members, the governor said holding of such a prestigious ceremony in their honour by their colleagues itself speaks volumes for their contribution to the profession and the Institute.
Earlier, Prof. Dr. Azmat Talaat, Dean, PGMI, welcoming the governor and the guests said the institute since its establishment in a couple of rooms of Lady Reading Hospital in 1984 had now sufficiently grown and got a well furnished building at Hayatabad. The PGMI, he added, has produced 2000 specialist doctors todate and presently apart from FCPS and FRCS in 13 different specialties of medical profession, various other diploma and PhD level courses are also in progress.
