Tolerating the intolerant

ADAM RAJ

According to an article by Jinger Jarret "Understanding the true meaning of tolerance" she says that "I believe that everyone has a right to believe what they want. However no right is absolute. It doesn't mean that you have the right to say whatever you want or to act on those beliefs".

Tolerance and Freedom of expression are probably the most misused and misunderstood words in the world today. They imply that one should have "concern for ideas, opinions and practices foreign to one's own" as well as "the right to express one's opinion" and yet unfortunately it doesn't specify the fact that if one party is not practicing that concern for the other, how is it expected to be practiced by the other side? That would be like saying that we can rape, steal or murder if we want but you must show tolerance towards it, because freedom demands that we do whatever we like and we don't care how the other party feels about it. Simply put, tolerance and freedom demands that they be practiced or expected without infringing on another's freedom or beliefs, only then do they fulfill the requirement of being called that. One can practice any religion they want, but one must also understand that there are issues sensitive to another religion and one's opinions about them is off limits. It's a live and let live policy, not punch me in the face and cry for lack of tolerance!
