US Senators appreciate Pakistan’s interfaith initiatives

ISLAMABAD - United States Senator Robert P. Casey Jr., Senator Benjamin L. Cardin and Senator Sam Brownback belonging to Democratic and Republican parties in a joint letter addressed to President Asif Ali Zardari have lauded Pakistan's National Campaign on Interfaith Harmony.They also appreciated setting up of Interfaith Harmony Committees in Pakistan.They said that this initiative has the potential to strengthen and advance human rights and counter gender and religious discriminations.


They have emphasized that by promoting interfaith harmony, these committees can also be a catalyst for strengthening grassroot support for tolerance and pluralism.


The Senators in their joint letter have also appreciated the efforts and services of Federal Minister Shahbaz Bhatti for protecting and promoting minorities' rights in Pakistan.


US Senators also commended the steps taken by the government to uplift and empower the minorities.


These steps include the appointment of the first cabinet level official on minorities to protect the rights of religious minorities as envisioned under the Pakistani Constitution; an allocation of a five percent quota in the Federal Workforce for members of minority religious groups; the official celebration of the holidays of minority religious groups and declaration of August 11 as national " Minority Day."


US Senators also commended Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani for various steps taken by his government to promote Interfaith Harmony and to protect the rights of the minorities in Pakistan.
