Confrontation

Are the judiciary and executive really on a collision course?

The Supreme Court of Pakistan recently ordered the arrest of Brig (Retd) Imtiaz and Adnan Khwaja, two beneficiaries of the NRO, amid heightened speculation that the Court is as angry as a bull seeing red on the inaction over its verdict(s) relevant to the now-defunct NRO. While the Ordinance - promulgated by former President Pervez Musharraf to curry favour with Benazir Bhutto and her People's Party - was declared void ab initio, and all cases closed by the NRO stood reopened, it is clear that the Supreme Court's target is the occupant of the Presidency. And not just any occupant; the main beneficiary of the NRO, now-President Asif Ali Zardari, is a prime target for the judiciary as the cases against him (in both local and foreign courts) are yet to be reopened because in his current capacity as head of state, Zardari enjoys legal immunity at home and abroad. However, the Supreme Court has a different take on that matter.
