Youth group threatens to cut Delhi-Kabul supply line

A youth group has threatened to close Wagah and Kashmir borders after two months if India do not stop violating the Indus Basin Treaty.

The lesser know group, Pakistan Water and Power Action Committee, gave the ultimatum at a rally and a sit-in outside the Governor's House on Sunday. The group is led by Abdullah Gul, former ISI chief Hameed Gul's son.

"We warn India if it do not stop violating the 1960 Indus Water Treaty and terrorist activities in Pakistan, the youths will seal Wagah and Kashmir borders and cut Delhi-Kabul supply lines," announced Mr Gul. He did not explain the violations.

Trader Faisal Bhatti, Meo Forum's Imran Shaukat and Muslim Lawyers' Zulfikar Moazzam also spoke.

Alleging that in an unannounced war and with $400 billion investment from the US, the IMF and Europe, India was building dams on Pakistani rivers, Mr Gul said, "We the youth of Pakistan also announce an unarmed war against New Delhi and will hold demonstration on Pakistan-India borders irrespective of its results."

He also demanded that the government "take recourse to the national interests, end artificial loadshedding, cut power tariff that is detrimental to the country's agriculture and industry".

The rally demanded that the government start 40,000 MW hydle projects that could also store 45 million acres feet water as well.

Protesters said if Islamabad imported electricity from New Delhi, it would tantamount to legalising water reservoirs being built by India in held Kashmir.
